The “Checkered Game of Life,” the original version of Life,  debuted in 1866.  Milton Bradley created this game when he was on the  verge of financial ruin, and the squares reflect his perspective:  there’s a square for “Ruin,” and a square for “Suicide.”  This image  from NYHistory, available only through the Wayback Machine.
