The Cat’s Meat Shop: Love and Other Things: this post documents Lee Jackson’s exploration of an 1890s British magazine called Pick Me Up. What fascinated me about this image — as well as a few others Jackson posted at the source — is that they feature women dressed in burlesque outfits, which are rarer toward the end of the century, and that they resemble the “women beating men” imagery from popular American publications like National Police Gazette. I’m intrigued by the theme of male submission, something not regularly discussed in the nineteenth century.
